ANNUAL INTER-HOUSE SPORTS COMPETITION OF UNIVERSITY SCHOOL
UNN Primary School
Celebrates Annual Inter-House Sports
The Akanu Ibiam Stadium, UNN, was agog as parents came in
their numbers to cheer their children that displayed sporting skills in
colourful outfits; the event was the celebration of the annual Inter-House
sports of the University Primary School.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, University of
Nigeria, Prof Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba who was represented by the Director
Strategic Contacts, Ethics and Publication, Dr. Casimir Ani said that the annual
Inter-house sports event has become a significant occasion to mould pupils who
turn out to be great future sportsmen.
Prof. Ozumba said that the School management and sports board
have dedicated their effort to teach the pupils, skills for self sustenance,
self reliance, and help them build their self esteem in preparation for any
future challenges through sports activities.
He further stated that the Inter- house sport would help
enlighten the pupils on how to work better as a team, stressing that team work
propel efficient speed and success in any endeavour.
Speaking at the occasion, the UNN, primary School, Chairman,
Board of Governors, Prof. Catherine Oreh noted that Inter-House Sports are
important parts of the school life and are renowned for being the liveliest events
in the school calendar. “The sports game are among other things meant to instil
into the children the spirit of sportsmanship as children learn to accept it
when they lose, and rejoice when they win, and still love each other in spite
of winning or losing”, she said.
Prof. Oreh hinted that
the drive of the Board of Governors is to make the University school the centre
for academic and sporting excellence not just in Nigeria, but globally.
Further, she applauded the Vice-Chancellor and his management
team, Alumni, parents and other sponsors stressing that without their unalloyed
assistance, the event would not have been grand and colourful.
Highlights at the sports meet include a lecture delivered by
a student of the University primary school, Iwuchukwu Chidiebube on the “Benefits
of participating in physical activities”. She said physical activity amongst
many other benefits reduces the risk of cancers, such as colon and breast
cancer.
The Inter-house sport unveiled a special relay race for
parents in various categories. The following parents who came first in the
various categories are Mrs Nkiru Ugwuja, Mrs Ngozi Nnaji, and Mr Cosmas Okolie.
They dedicated their prizes to their children, stating that they were motivated
by their wards to participate in the race.
